Waiting is one of the most common places a Christian woman finds herself, and one of the hardest. Maybe you are waiting on a diagnosis or on healing, for a spouse, to have child, a job, a home, a prodigal to come back, or simply for a prayer you have prayed for years. Whatever the details, the questions underneath are often the same: Does God see me? Is He still working? What do I do while I wait?

Scripture speaks to waiting again and again. Below are 40 Bible verses about waiting on God, grouped by what your heart might need today. All are quoted from the English Standard Version (ESV). Read them slowly, pick one to carry through the week, or write one on a card and keep it where you’ll see it each morning.

When you are wrestling with God’s timing

A note on context: some of these verses were first spoken about specific events (Habakkuk 2:3 about a coming vision, 2 Peter 3:9 about Christ’s return). They still show us God’s character: He is never late, and He is patient with us.

  • 2 Peter 3:9: “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”

  • Psalm 31:14–15a: “But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, ‘You are my God.’ My times are in your hand.”

When you need peace and courage for today

Jeremiah 29:11 was first written to Israel in exile, a people told to settle in and wait seventy years. It isn’t a promise of a quick fix. It is a promise that God’s plans for His people are good, even in a long wait.

  • Proverbs 3:5–6: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
  • Isaiah 26:3: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”
  • Philippians 4:6–7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
  • Hebrews 10:23: “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.”
  • Romans 8:28: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
  • Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
  • Psalm 34:18: “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
  • Joshua 1:9: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
  • Lamentations 3:22–23: “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV Scripture card: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

How to use these verses in your waiting season

  • Pray one verse a day. Read it, then turn it into a sentence of prayer: “Lord, help me wait for you and take courage today.”
  • Write it down. Copying a verse by hand slows your mind and helps it stay with you.
  • Keep it in sight. A verse on the bathroom mirror, your phone lock screen or your morning mug is a small, steady reminder.
  • Journal what you notice. Write down what you are feeling, what you are asking for, and where you have seen God’s faithfulness, even in small ways.
